Assistance Resources for Furloughed Employees and Families​

If you or someone you know has been impacted by furloughs or SNAP benefit reductions, there are several organizations and financial institutions offering temporary assistance and relief programs. Below is a list of available resources, including contact information and support options.

Food Assistance​

Feeding America
A national network of 200 food banks and 60,000 partner pantries providing food to affected families.Visit the Feeding America website to find a local food bank by Clicking Here

Local School Districts
Families impacted by furlough may qualify for free or reduced school breakfast and lunch programs. Contact your district for more information.

Banking & Financial Assistance

​

Bank of America

Assistance available for furloughed federal employees.

Call the Priority Assistance Line at 844-219-0690.

Chase Bank
Offering support to U.S. government employees affected by the shutdown.
Customer Service: 1-888-356-0023.

​

Congressional Federal Credit Union
Relief Line of Credit and additional assistance programs are available.
Contact Member Services at 800-491-2328 or visit a branch.

FedChoice Federal Credit Union
Offering a variety of options for existing and new members in need of assistance.

​

Interior Federal Credit Union
Special loans for furloughed workers, available to both members and non-members.
Loans up to the equivalent of two net paychecks, interest-free for 30 days.

Navy Federal Credit Union
Offering a special loan program for affected members.
Call 1-888-842-6328.

​

PayPal
Providing $25 million in interest-free cash advances to furloughed federal employees.
Existing PayPal Credit customers call 1-877-689-1975.
New applicants should apply first and call after approval.

​

U.S. Bank
Waiving late fees for missed mortgage payments and deferring first payments on new mortgages.

​

U.S. Employees Credit Union
Offering shutdown loans for a limited time.

SunTrust (now Truist)
Programs are in place to assist clients affected by the shutdown.

​

Synchrony Bank
Allowing deferred payments for affected customers with store cards such as Amazon, Lowe’s, Walmart, JCPenney, and others.

Union Plus (for Union Members)
Multiple relief options including a $300 furlough grant, mortgage assistance loans, and payment grace periods for insurance policies.

Wells Fargo
Providing several assistance programs depending on the type of account or service.

Grants, Savings, and Credit Relief

FEEA-NARFE Fund
Offering $100 grants to active federal employee members not receiving pay during the furlough.

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)
Allows suspension of loan payments while in non-pay status.

Extending auto loan and lease payments for 30 days for furloughed federal employees.

Offering deferred payments of 30 days.

Ford Credit, GM Financial, and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services
Offering payment deferrals, late fee waivers, and case-by-case support for qualifying customers.

Offering help with late fees, extensions, and payment adjustments.

Providing short-term payment solutions.

Offering short-term assistance and flexible payment options.

Offering flexible payment options and a Promise to Pay program.

Housing and Rental Support

National Rental Home Council
Offering deferred rent payment options with no late fees for furloughed renters.

Office of Personnel Management (OPM)


Provides sample letters for federal workers to contact landlords, lenders, and utilities to request payment assistance. Visit the OPM website for templates and details.​

Insurance and Personal Finance

MetLife Auto and Home
Offering a one-time, 30-day grace period on premium payments.
Call 1-800-GET-MET8.

​

Fidelity and Guaranty Life Insurance Company
Waiving insurance charges for 30 days for furloughed policyholders.
For policies beginning with “Y,” call 844-800-9146.
For all other policies, call 888-513-8797.

​

Additional Relief Options

Rent-A-Center (Benefits Plus Members)
Eligible members may receive a payment waiver for up to four months if unemployed.

​

USAA
Offering deferments for loans and credit card payments.

​

U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM)
Federal employees may be eligible for unemployment compensation administered by state agencies. Check your state’s requirements for eligibility.
